HOW WE USE SPORTS MASSAGE TO HELP OUR CLIENTS PREVENT INJURY

Massage therapy is one of the most commonly used methods to increase recovery from sports based pain and injury. By addressing the restrictions in muscles that have developed as a result of repetitive motions or acute injury, sports massage improves range of motion in joints, lengthens tight muscles, and reduces pain.

During any sport, muscle fibers are working hard to make you run faster, lift more weight or jump higher. When a muscle is used strenuously, a small amount of damage occurs in the fibers, only to repair as you rest after the activity finishes.

When muscles are under the same stress over and over, those muscles don’t get a chance to recover and can slowly start to develop pain as the damage accumulates.

As a way to make your body stop using those muscles, your body protects itself by tightening up the muscles around it and prevent movement. Unfortunately, as sports people, we often need to train or compete again too soon, and so we start to develop muscle imbalances.

Sports massage is used to prevent those muscles tightening up and increase range of motion to prevent muscle imbalance, but also to improve blood flow to the healing muscles in the body. Remedial massage and sports massage use similar techniques to  treat and prevent muscle tightness and injury.

What Is Sports Massage Good For?

Sports Massage can help increase the flow of blood and nutrients throughout the body to decrease soreness after training and reduce tightness to in muscles.

For people who perform any repetitive sports and activities, or work in a stationary position, it's expected to see an increase in knots throughout the body in the areas that are most under stress.

Sports Massage helps to remove those knots and strains throughout the body to get back to training quicker and keep living pain-free.

Is Sports Massage Painful?

All Staff at Axiom Performance Recovery are Qualified Remedial Massage therapists and have extensive experience treating a wide range of clients, all with different pain tolerance.

It is our job as a Remedial Massage Therapist to gauge your tolerance to pressure and treat appropriately. As the body comes under stress from pain, it will tighten up to resist the force against it, making the treatment less effective.

We use the appropriate amount of pressure to resolve any issues through the body. However, you may feel slight discomfort we will be in communication with you throughout your treatment to ensure you're as comfortable as possible.

Know that any good Remedial or Sports Massage will result in some discomfort, but only as much as it requires.

 FAQ'S

  • Do you guys do health fund rebates?

    Yes we do!

  • Whats the difference between a sports massage and a remedial massage?

Remedial massage and sports massage use similar techniques to treat and prevent muscle tightness and injury.

Remedial massage is a broader term encompassing soft tissue techniques used by those who have completed a Diploma of Remedial Massage, and registered practitioner through Massage and Myotherapy Australia (  https://www.massagemyotherapy.com.au/Home or another accreditation body.

A remedial massage therapist like those at Axiom will be able to provide health fund rebates through the HICAPS system.

Remedial massage will use techniques such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release, PNF stretching and deep tissue massage to resolve muscle tightness that has developed in the body.

Sports massage often employs the same techniques as remedial massage but is tailored to sportspeople and athletes.

Sports massage requires an increased knowledge of the sport or activity, and the session will be planned in accordance with training and competition schedules to ensure the client is able to train and compete at their best. Sports massage is a tool often used by athletes to increase recovery from training and lower the rate of injury
